About the Master Level IV in Orff Schulwerk
The Master Level IV is a two week extension of the Orff Training program at the George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. It is an outgrowth of the 1 week Master Class in Elemental Music which I have taught over the past 15 years in various locations. Responding to the requests of students for a more intensive experience, the Master Level IV extends the traditional three tiered training sequence of Orff training programs. It is not a required component for Orff certification but represents a completely voluntary commitment to the advanced exploration of elemental music through performance, analysis, composition and improvisation.
As in other Levels of Orff training, movement and recorder are classes make up part of each day. Donna Fleetwood, Director of the Orff Training Program at George Mason University, teaches movement. Donna is one of the finest movement teachers I have ever worked with. Her ability to solicit and integrate student ideas for movement into each experience marks her as a leader in elemental dance and movement instruction.
Matthew McCoy presents the recorder instruction in the Master Level IV. Matt's command of the instrument along with his extensive knowledge of early music and formidable improvisational technique marks him as a national leader in recorder instruction.
The Master Level IV is not currently recognized as a formal element of certification in Orff Schulwerk by the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Interest continues to grow in opportunities for training beyond Level III and certainly the idea of a fourth level of training is being discussed in many locales.
The Master Level IV was recently offered for the third time at George Mason University from July 17-28. This year, enrollment was extended to 18 participants and three more were placed on a waiting list It is increasingly clear that more of these types of courses are needed. Completion of an A.O.S.A. approved Level III course and skills commensurate with this level of training are required for entrance.
