Volume V; Dance #1

The following is a graphic score of the Dance #1 found on pp. 95 - 101 of Volume V; Music for Children by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman It is also known as the Ekstatischer Tanz. The work was one of Keetman's favorites and has been recorded a number of times. This graphic visualization is based on ideas of Brigitte Warner presented during my studies with her in the early 1980's. Each graphic symbol represents a particular 5/4 pattern played on a percussion instrument. The entire movement is accompanied by two patterns performed throughout the work by dancers/players. The two solo lines A and B can be individual players or groups of players For the actual patterns, particularly the timpani patterns, please refer to the original work. Ask careful listeners to explain the hollow circle graphic which appears in episode 6, player B, bars 10 and 12. . This graphic score is meant to serve as a listening guide and also to stimulate similar creations by students of Orff Schulwerk.Click here to see an example of this process.
